In the article l"Live and lLearn ( wWhy wWe hHave cCollege) by Louis Menand, the author talks about three theories on higher education, and how it works in colleges. Theory number one is based on meritocracy thinking, theory two is based on democratic thinking, and theory three is based on vocational necessity. The theories that best relate to me as tof why I am going to college isare theory number one which, meritocracy thinking; and theory number two which is, democratic thinking.
I relate to the democratic way of thinking because college was a challenge for me. byI saw going to college I saw it as a way of testing my abilities and my dedication to overcome those challenges. I wanted to learn things I was afraid to learn before pursuing a higher education. Loius Menand stated that people who support in the democratic way of thinking believe “education is about personal and intellectual growth, not about winning some race to the top”( (Menand, 24).t This what Iis exactly what I believe, since I came to college to see how much I could grow, not only personally but also intellectually.
The meritocracy way of thinking is the belief that people should be sorted into their majors' right way. ,Supporters of theise suppway orf tshinking also believe that grades matter more than anything. I relate to this theory because I believe that grades motivate students to work hard on their studies, just like how money motivates people to work hard at their jobs.
